How the time card calculator works
- Each day: clock-out minus clock-in, minus the unpaid break. Overnight shifts roll into the next day.
- The week's total is shown as hours:minutes and as decimal hours (what most payroll systems use).
- Hours past your overtime threshold are paid at the overtime rate if you enter an hourly rate.

Questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtract unpaid breaks. 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30 minute lunch is 8 hours 30 minutes minus 30 minutes = 8 hours.
How do I turn minutes into decimal hours for payroll?
Divide the minutes by 60. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. The calculator shows both formats.
How is overtime calculated?
Under the US federal rule (FLSA), non-exempt employees earn 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also require daily overtime; change the settings to match your rules. Results are estimates, not payroll or legal advice.
What if a shift goes past midnight?
Enter the times as usual. If the clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, the calculator assumes the shift ended the next day.
